The Katavi National Park is located in the western part of Tanzanie, specifically in the Katavi region. With an area of 4,471 km², it ranks as the country's third-largest wildlife reserve dedicated to mammal protection. History

During the British period, Katavi National Park served as the Bismarck hunting reserve. The site was then known as "Rukwa Game Reserve".

Following Tanzania's declaration of independence in 1974, the site was renamed and delimited to an area of 2,253 km². It was expanded to its current size in 1996.

The Rich Wildlife of Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park stands as a testament to Tanzania's natural wealth. This picturesque reserve is home to a remarkable variety of mammals, including zebras, African buffalo, wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, hyenas, antelopes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and many others. Hippopotamuses and crocodiles can also be observed along the Katuma river.

With more than 400 bird species, Katavi National Park establishes itself as an outstanding birdwatching destination. You may spot herons, plovers, spoonbills, and various stork species, including yellow-billed storks, shoebills, and open-billed storks. Among raptors, keep an eye out for the African fish eagle, the martial eagle, and the white-backed vulture.

Air travel is the fastest transportation solution to reach Katavi. Regular flights connect the park from Dar Es-Salaam. Charter flights can also be arranged.

By car, the journey takes considerably longer. Allow two to three days of driving to reach the park from Dar Es-Salaam.
