Tanzanie, a land of adventure

When we think of Tanzanie, visions of endless steppe landscapes stretch across our minds. This raw wilderness naturally calls for adventure, and visitors never tire of setting out on safari to photograph the "Big Five" (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros). The Ruaha National Park, the Arusha National Park, and the Serengeti National Park are well-established destinations for travelers.

Beyond its reputation as a premier wildlife destination, Tanzanie also boasts remarkable coastal charm. Who hasn't dreamed of visiting the Zanzibar archipelago, unwinding on pristine beaches, swimming in crystalline waters, and more? Tanzanie's seaside offers moments of pure relaxation—yet adventure always awaits those who seek it.

Really, wherever you venture in the country, you'll discover an abundance of outdoor activities. Safaris and hiking are already classics. So, to venture off the beaten path, why not try kayaking? This activity suits families and groups of friends equally well. Kayaking requires no special experience, and you won't need lessons. Prepare yourself to paddle across turquoise seas or preserved lakes. At the same time, kayaking offers the advantage of being silent—no motor noise—allowing you to draw closer to wildlife. This increases your chances of spotting shy species. Without doubt, a kayaking expedition in Tanzanie will leave you with unforgettable memories!

Where to kayak in Tanzanie?

As mentioned, you have two options: sea kayaking or lake kayaking. If you're drawn to coastal scenery, set your course for Zanzibar! Paddle gently across crystalline waters to reach the archipelago's small paradise islands. Stop at Changuu, once a prison for enslaved people—hence its alternate name, Prison Island. Today, it's one of Tanzanie's best spots for observing sea turtles. Take time from your kayak to enjoy a snorkeling session with these magnificent creatures. You can then head to Pungume Island to wander its sandbars, to Menai Bay to explore coral reefs and swim with dolphins, or to Pange Island, among others.

The inland landscapes are equally breathtaking for kayaking. Located within the Arusha National Park, Lake Momela is the most sought-after site for a canoe excursion. Birdwatchers will be particularly enchanted, as the area hosts hundreds of bird species, with an abundance of flamingos. Along the shoreline, you may spot buffalo, giraffes, and antelopes drinking. On clear days, it's possible to see Mount Kilimanjaro from Lake Momela.

Another popular destination for kayaking in Tanzanie, the Lake Tanganyika offers a surface area of 32,900 km² to satisfy your wanderlust. It's the world's second-largest and second-deepest freshwater lake. As day draws to a close, clear your mind contemplating a magnificent sunset.

What's the best time to kayak in Tanzanie?

Tanzanie enjoys a temperate tropical climate inland. However, in coastal regions, rainfall and heat are considerably more intense. The best season to travel to Tanzanie runs from May to October, corresponding to the dry season.

Before May comes the rainy season, best avoided. The period from November through mid-December offers another option, though showers are more frequent. At this time of year, there are few tourists. So you can enjoy the landscapes freely from your kayak.
