At the foot of the Uluguru Mountains, Morogoro opens the door to Tanzania's wild south: hiking, safari at Mikumi, and immersion in Selous.

When you're stopping between Dodoma and Dar es Salaam, Morogoro welcomes you with its genuinely charming atmosphere, dominated by Mount Mzumbe, which peaks at 2,000 meters. A calm and peaceful retreat, the town itself may not be bursting with attractions, yet it offers a pleasant stay and genuine encounters with locals. It's primarily a gateway to the stunning Mikumi National Park, located some fifty kilometers to the southwest via the Tanzam Highway. From Morogoro, you can also venture to Selous Game Reserve, one of the world's largest wildlife reserves. The region is also home to the magnificent Uluguru Mountains, where rewarding hikes reveal breathtaking landscapes, particularly in the southern part of the town.

With around 300,000 inhabitants, Morogoro stands as an important economic hub thanks to infrastructure connecting it to the coast, as well as its agricultural richness. Beyond its strategic position for tourism, the town thrives through numerous commercial activities, textile factories, and farming.

Exploring the Town of Morogoro

To navigate the worthwhile attractions in Morogoro, you have several transportation options. Local minibuses, called daladalas by residents, are a budget-friendly choice. Piki pikis—motorcycle taxis available throughout the town—offer flexibility. For greater independence, renting a private vehicle is also a solid option.

Among must-see attractions, the Hindu temple and all programs organized by Chilunga Cultural Tourism deserve priority. Take time to admire the old German-era buildings and other historic structures that testify to the town's and region's rich past. Morning or afternoon, venture to the main market, where you'll find an abundance of fresh regional produce—from fruits and vegetables to fish and seafood, grains, and legumes. It's also an excellent place to pick up local handicrafts and souvenirs.

Hiking and Camping on the Southern Hills

The local community is deeply invested in organizing tourism events. Don't miss the opportunity to undertake rewarding hikes with overnight camping on the hills south of town. Numerous outdoor activities are available at the base of the Uluguru Mountains. The area is also home to many non-governmental organizations that welcome volunteers from around the world.

Mikumi National Park: A Regional Highlight

Located roughly fifty kilometers from Morogoro, Mikumi National Park is an absolute must from your Morogoro base. It's Tanzania's third-largest national park. The park unfolds across tree-studded savanna, bisected by the paved highway connecting Dar es Salaam and Mbeya.

Your safari invites you to observe populations of antelopes, elands, greater kudus, and sable antelopes. You'll also encounter Africa's iconic wildlife: lions, buffalo, hippopotamuses, wildebeest, elephants, giraffes, zebras, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, and African slender-snouted crocodiles.

Selous Game Reserve: Another Essential Destination

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, Selous Reserve is well worth a trip from Morogoro. Spanning 55,000 square kilometers and divided by the Rufuji River, visitors can only access the northern section, designated for photographic safaris. The vast majority of the reserve remains a hunting concession for specialized operators. The river and its tributaries feed numerous lakes and create seasonal waterholes during the dry season.

Incredible fauna awaits you here: the area harbors nearly 800,000 large mammals, including the world's highest concentration of elephants. Buffalo, African wild dogs, wildebeest, zebras, and black rhinoceros thrive throughout. Leopards, cheetahs, antelopes, giraffes, and baboons are equally abundant. You'll also encounter countless bird species, including the martial eagle and trumpeter hornbill. The local flora is remarkable, with some 2,000 species. The landscape is defined by acacias and baobabs.

The distance between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro is 178 kilometers. It's best to travel by taxi or private vehicle.

A direct train from Dar es Salaam reaches Morogoro once daily on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
