Olmoti crater is located north of Ngorongoro crater, within the conservation area of the same name, in Tanzania. Less frequented than its neighbors Ngorongoro and Empakaai, it is reached after a hike of approximately 30 minutes from the Maasai village of Nainokanoka. At the summit, a 6.5 km diameter caldera carpeted with grasslands and crossed by streams opens up before the visitor.

The hike is short and accessible, yet it traverses living territory: the Maasai graze their cattle here, and wildlife moves freely between the grassy slopes and high-altitude forests. The summit rises to approximately 3,080 meters and offers clear views across the rift and neighboring craters.

Unlike vehicle safaris in Tanzania's major parks, the approach is on foot and with an armed forest ranger, allowing for a more nuanced reading of the landscapes and vegetation.

Geological and cultural history

Olmoti crater is the remnant of an extinct volcano formed approximately 2 to 3 million years ago, during the Pleistocene. At that time, tectonic activity along the Great Rift Valley gave rise to a chain of volcanoes of which Olmoti is a part, alongside Ngorongoro and Empakaai.

Successive eruptions deposited thick layers of lava and ash. The internal collapse of the summit then shaped a shallow caldera, 6.5 km wide, which today rises to around 3,080 meters in elevation. The crater floor is covered with grasslands and drained by several streams that join a waterfall cascading down the crater's flanks.

The name "Olmoti" comes from Maasai and means "cooking pot,
