The first refuge on the Marangu route, Mandara Hut marks the end of the first day of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. At 2,720 m altitude, on the edge of the tropical forest in Kilimanjaro National Park, this wooden hut camp offers solid shelter — a unique feature of this itinerary — before continuing the trek toward Horombo and Kibo.

Why stay here

Mandara Hut is the first camp on the Marangu route, reached after approximately 3 hours of walking from the park entrance (Marangu Gate). It is also the only Mount Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary offering accommodation in solid wooden huts: on Machame, Lemosho, or Rongai, trekkers sleep in tents. This distinction makes a real difference when recovering after a day of climbing through humid forest.

Refuge atmosphere

Arrival comes late in the afternoon, after crossing the tropical forest populated with colobus monkeys and hornbills. The camp groups around a dozen wooden cabins arranged in a clearing, framed by the canopy. Refuge life centers on the main building: trekkers from all nations, guides, and porters cross paths at dinner time. Evenings are brief — early bed to prepare for the next day's stage to Horombo — and silence soon settles over the forest.

The huts

Accommodation is in wooden huts with a capacity of 6 to 8 people each, equipped with bunk beds. The camp totals 60 bunk beds, distributed among the various cabins. Sleeping arrangements are basic: mattresses provided, but you'll need to bring your own sleeping bag (or rent one through your climbing operator). Lighting is limited — bring a headlamp.

Location

Mandara Hut sits within Kilimanjaro National Park, on the mountain's southeastern slope. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the most convenient entry point, followed by a road transfer of about 1 hour to Marangu Gate, then 3 hours of walking to the camp. The Marangu route is Kilimanjaro's oldest climbing path, sometimes nicknamed the "Coca-Cola route."

Around the camp

Once you've settled in, the Maundi volcanic crater lies less than 1 km from camp. The short trail leads to the crater's rim and offers, on clear days, an open view of the tropical forest below and the foothills of Mawenzi. It's also a good acclimatization exercise, recommended by guides before the long next day's stage to Horombo Hut (3,720 m).
