High-altitude camp at 3,960 m on the south flank of Mount Kilimanjaro, a key stage on the Machame, Lemosho and Umbwe routes, at the foot of the Barranco Wall.

Barranco Hut Camp, or Barranco camp, is a high-altitude bivouac situated at 3,960 meters on the south flank of Mount Kilimanjaro. It forms one of the key stages of the Machame, Lemosho and Umbwe itineraries, generally reached on the 3rd or 4th day of trekking. The site sits at the upper limit of the alpine moorland, just before the alpine desert, facing the imposing Barranco Wall.

Why this stage matters

Passing through Barranco Camp is far more than a logistical stop: it's a crucial acclimatization waypoint for the rest of the trek. Most trekkers arrive here after climbing to Lava Tower (approximately 4,600 meters) before descending to sleep at camp. This "climb high, sleep low" profile enhances altitude adaptation and significantly improves your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.

The camp also marks a psychological turning point: it brings together trekkers from the different itineraries, who prepare together to tackle the Barranco Wall the next morning, then progress toward Karanga and Barafu, the final assault camp before the summit.

What to see here

The camp takes its name from the Spanish word barranco, meaning "deep ravine" or "gorge." It's situated on the edge of a deeply cut valley, dominated by the dark cliffs of the wall. At dawn, the glacial peaks of Kibo glow pink-orange, while the Shira plateau stands out to the west.

The surrounding vegetation is among the most unique on Mount Kilimanjaro. Two endemic species of high-altitude Tanzania can be observed here:

  • Dendrosenecio kilimanjari, or giant groundsel, whose branched trunks can exceed several meters in height;
  • Lobelia deckenii, giant lobelia adapted to night frost thanks to a protective mechanism for its central bud.

The Barranco Wall

The Barranco Wall, a rock face approximately 257 meters high, is the most striking feature of the site. Nicknamed Breakfast Wall because it's climbed just after breakfast, it requires no climbing equipment but demands balance and handholds on certain sections. The ascent typically takes 1 to 2 hours.

One section, known as kissing rock (a narrow passage where the wall seems to squeeze), forces trekkers to press themselves against the rock face to get through a tight passage overhanging the ravine. The crossing is done in single file, guided by the mountain guides.

History and geology

The Barranco Wall is the result of Mount Kilimanjaro's volcanic activity and massive landslides that, according to geological estimates, occurred 150,000 to 200,000 years ago. Kibo, the central cone of the massif, is today a dormant—not extinct—volcano: fumarolic activity persists near the summit crater. The layers of lava and pyroclastic materials exposed on the south flank explain the wall's steep profile.

Practical conditions

The camp has no permanent huts despite its name: accommodation is provided under tents, erected by agency teams. The only fixed structure is a ranger cabin located to the north, near the base of the wall. Sanitation is limited to long-drop toilets; no showers are available.

Temperatures drop rapidly after sunset and can approach freezing at night, with risks of rain, sleet or snow depending on the season. Essential gear includes:

  • high-cut hiking boots already broken in;
  • layering system: breathable base layer, fleece, down jacket, waterproof jacket;
  • hat, gloves, buff;
  • sleeping bag rated for -10 °C minimum;
  • headlamp, water bottle or hydration bladder (2 to 3 liters);
  • small first-aid kit and altitude sickness medication if recommended by your doctor.

When to visit

The most favorable periods for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and passing through Barranco Camp correspond to the dry seasons: June to October and January to February. The sky is clearer, trails are less muddy, and visibility of the summit is better. March to May concentrate the main rainy season and should be avoided by most trekkers.

How to get there

Barranco Hut Camp is accessible only on foot, as part of a guided trek on the Machame route (from Machame Gate), Lemosho route (from Londorossi Gate) or Umbwe route. National park regulations require the presence of a certified guide and going through an authorized agency. Most trekkers arrive in Tanzania via Kilimanjaro International Airport, the closest entry point to the massif.

Nearby on the route

  • Lava Tower (approx. 4,600 m): acclimatization peak reached the morning before the camp.
  • Karanga Camp (approx. 3,995 m): the next stage after crossing the Barranco Wall.
  • Barafu Camp (approx. 4,673 m): final assault camp toward Uhuru Peak.
  • Shira Plateau: visible to the west from camp, remnant of an ancient crater.
