Lake Natron River Camp is a permanent tent campement located in Engerescero, south of Natron village, in the far north of Tanzania. It caters to travelers who want to spend one or two nights at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the world's only active carbonatite volcano, and observe the planet's largest breeding colony of lesser flamingos—more than 2.5 million birds according to census data.

Why stay here

The Lake Natron region has few accommodations, and the camp leverages this scarcity to offer a straightforward, functional stopover well-positioned toward major sites: the lake, the volcano, and the Engare Sero waterfalls. It's a logical halt for itineraries connecting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Manyara to the Kenyan border, or for those extending a classic safari with a more geological and ornithological sequence.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is that of a bush camp rather than a lodge: no marble or monumental reception, but tents lined up in dry vegetation, the sound of wind, and at day's end, the silhouette of Lengai cutting the southern horizon. Hammocks strung between two acacias, discreet room service, and private verandas set a slow pace, at odds with the bustle of larger parks. Staff are partly drawn from surrounding Maasai villages.

The tents

The camp has 8 permanent tents plus 1 family tent. Each tent includes:

• Beds with mosquito nets
• Private bathroom with shower, toilet, and sink
• Dedicated solar energy
• Private veranda overlooking the garden, some with shaded terrace

Comfort is deliberately understated, without excess luxury, reflecting the logic of an isolated, self-sufficient camp.

Dining and services

The camp has a restaurant and bar/lounge with views, opening onto the landscape. Breakfast is continental (hot beverages, pastries, bread, butter, jam, cereals, and fresh fruit). Lunch, dinner, and picnic baskets are available on request, with adaptation to dietary requirements.

Location and access

The camp sits along the main road, south of Natron village, near the lake shore, in northern Tanzania. Typical 4x4 travel times:

• About 6 hours from Arusha
• About 4 hours from Tarangire or Karatu
• About 4.5 hours from the Serengeti
• About 3 hours from Lake Manyara or Mto wa Mbu

Tracks are passable in the dry season, though a 4x4 remains essential in the rainy season, when sections become muddy or flooded. An airstrip also allows air access from major northern circuit airports.

When to visit

The Lake Natron region is visitable year-round, but two windows stand out:

• June to October (dry season): more reliable tracks, manageable daytime temperatures, ideal for hikes to the waterfalls and Lengai ascents
• January to March: lesser flamingo breeding season, spectacular concentrations on the lake

March–April and November, wetter months, can complicate road access; it's wise to build extra time into your itinerary then.

Combine with northern Tanzania

The camp fits naturally into a northern safari circuit. To extend or prepare the Natron leg, consider:
