The dala-dala: THE means of transport in Tanzania
Among the typical modes of transport in Tanzania, you'll find the dala-dala; a sort of minibus, similar to a van. How do you know which one to take? Pay attention! Their destination is written on a sign placed on the windshield (and there are no official routes)!
When boarding the vehicle, you'll need to settle with the driver's assistant, who is responsible for collecting fares. Next? You'll need to use your elbows to find a spot among passengers packed like sardines (some dala-dalas even have a third person in charge of organizing the space on board…).
Designed to accommodate about twenty passengers, dala-dalas are always crammed with people (at least always 30-35 people) – sometimes with passengers even clinging to the outside. If the dala-dala isn't already completely packed, buy the equivalent of two seats to have a bit more space.
The dala-dala is very widespread, so you'll rarely wait more than ten minutes before boarding. The downside? Besides the crowding, this type of transport isn't ideal if you're traveling with a lot of luggage. Local passengers often store their bags… wherever they can! It's not uncommon to see sacks of rice, suitcases, or furniture on the roof.
Inexpensive – around €0.50 per person – the dala-dala is quite a long mode of transport, with many stops. Not always comfortable, but authentic: a ride in a dala-dala is an opportunity to meet local people and observe their way of life. Be aware that your neighbor might be transporting fish or livestock…
It's worth noting that solidarity reigns in dala-dalas. Despite the chaos, passengers are respectful and honest. As a result, altercations and theft are extremely rare.

The Bajaj: the local tuk-tuk
The bajaj is nothing more than the Tanzanian tuk-tuk, a motorized tricycle that serves as a taxi. This type of vehicle can carry up to three passengers and is ideal for traveling on small roads, not always very passable – where conventional vehicles don't venture.
The bajaj is also a good alternative when there's heavy traffic. Indeed, due to its small size, it weaves easily between other vehicles and allows you to navigate effortlessly in case of congestion.

When to use it? The bajaj is recommended for short distances or for traveling from village to village via narrow roads. It's a much less expensive option than a regular taxi (expect around €2.75). |
The bus: the safest means of transport in Tanzania
The local bus is the most widely used public transport in Tanzania, especially for making long journeys across the country. Many lines operate regular connections between major cities, such as Arusha - Nairobi.
There are also express buses, which are faster due to fewer stops. Less crowded, more punctual, and equipped with air conditioning, they serve major routes, such as Dar es-Salaam - Arusha.

When and where to buy tickets? Regardless of the bus company, tickets must be purchased at the ticket windows or kiosks at bus stations. To ensure you have a seat, it's recommended to buy them one or two days before departure. |
The 4x4: the essential vehicle for safari
Like the dala-dala or the bajaj, the 4x4 is a very commonly used vehicle in Tanzania. It allows you to travel freely and tackle any type of road.Safe and comfortable, the 4x4 is also the preferred vehicle for wildlife expeditions…
Our advice? Opt for a safari with a Tanzanian driver! In addition to mastering vehicle operation, they will share with you their culture and knowledge of endemic fauna and flora. They will also favor trails more conducive to spotting animals.
The train: the means of transport that connects major cities
There are two major train lines in Tanzania. The first, called TAZARA (Tanzania Zambia Railway), spans more than 1,800 kilometers, from Dar Es Salaam to Zambia. The second, called Central line, connects Dar Es Salaam to Kigoma.
Ideal for very long journeys, the train in Tanzania is an adventure… Delays (frequent), extreme slowness, unexpected stops: this mode of transport holds many surprises. But it's also an opportunity to observe wild nature and share privileged moments with local people.
