1. Nungwi Beach

Nungwi Beach is considered by many to be the most beautiful beach in Zanzibar and even one of the world's most beautiful beaches according to CNN. Located on the northern tip of the island, this beach was once a fishing village where traditional dhows (small sailing boats with white sails) were built. Today, it's the island's most popular beach and one of the most visited spots by travellers. While you can still admire some artisans crafting traditional dhows, the beach primarily attracts visitors for its paradisiacal setting.

2. Jambiani Beach

Located in the southeast of Unguja, Zanzibar's main island, Jambiani Beach strikes the perfect balance between local life and dreamlike landscapes. This fishing village is renowned for its authenticity and peaceful atmosphere, far from the large resorts of the island's north. On the beach side, you can relax on a 4 km stretch of white sand where incredibly clear turquoise waters invite pure escapism. Note that like most bays on the island, the beach is subject to tidal constraints, which may require you to walk to reach the water. It's an opportunity to observe local life with fishermen and seaweed harvesters. You can meet the women who harvest seaweed for the cosmetics and culinary industries.

3. Paje Beach

Just a few kilometres north of Jambiani, don't miss the famous Paje Beach. In the village, you'll love its peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. On the beach side, you'll be captivated by its paradisiacal setting with fine sand, turquoise waters and coconut palms. Here too, tides are significant, so you can't swim all day. However, this beach has all the conditions for water sports. In fact, it's THE kitesurfing spot par excellence (particularly between June and October and between December and February). During low tide, you'll also encounter fishermen, seaweed farmers and shell collectors.

4. Pingwe Beach

In the northeast of Zanzibar, Pingwe Beach is a haven of peace. Its coral reef, located 1 km from the shore, creates a natural swimming pool that will delight swimming and snorkelling enthusiasts. This beach is also renowned for its famous restaurant perched on a small rocky islet in the middle of the sea. Called 'The Rock Bar Restaurant', this venue is accessible on foot (at low tide) and by boat or swimming (at high tide). One thing's for sure: this utterly unique and photogenic establishment is a must-see on your Zanzibar trip.

5. Matemwe Beach

Still in the northeast of the island, discover one of Zanzibar's most beautiful beaches: Matemwe. Once again, you'll find all the ingredients for a paradisiacal setting: crystal-clear waters, dazzling white sand and coconut palms stretching to the horizon. Despite its reputation, this beach has managed to maintain a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Beyond being an excellent spot for lazing about, Matemwe Beach is also a premier scuba diving and snorkelling destination. Several diving sites, including Mnemba Atoll, are easily accessible from the shore.

6. Mangapwani Beach

Mangapwani Beach is one of the best beaches in Zanzibar for swimming. And for good reason. Firstly, because it's less subject to tidal changes, and secondly, because the water access is gentle. It's also one of the rare beaches without coral reefs along the shoreline. On a darker historical note, this beach was once a site of slave trade. Several caves were used as hideouts by prisoners of that era. You can visit the coral cave in particular.

7. Michamwi Beach

If you're looking for the ideal beach to watch the sunset during your Zanzibar trip, head to Michamwi Beach. Facing Chwaka Bay, it's the perfect place to wind down your day gently. You can visit the Kae Funk Sunset Beach Bar, a venue with a great atmosphere where you can enjoy the spectacle with a good cocktail while listening to music!
