Lake Victoria, Africa's Largest Freshwater Lake

With an area of 68,800 km² (roughly the size of Ireland), Lake Victoria is Africa's largest freshwater lake and the world's second largest. Its shores are characterized by savannas, forests and authentic villages where you can encounter three ethnic groups: the Hayas, Himas and Sukumas. This lake, stretching 50 km in length, is an alkaline and salty body of water located in the Arusha region in northern Tanzania. Characterized by a deep red color, the water of Lake Natron contains a significant quantity of soda and chemical natron, with temperatures ranging from 40 to 60°C.

Despite relatively harsh environmental conditions, the lake is home to several animal species. Among these are two species of fish endemic to Tanzania (Alcolapia latilabri and Alcolapia Ndalalani) and flamingos that arrive by the millions each year to breed. An extraordinary natural spectacle to witness at Lake Natron between June and November. Surrounded by mountains, Lake Natron also offers the opportunity to admire the splendid dormant volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai and to undertake a trek or safari to discover the surrounding streams and waterfalls.

Lake Malawi and Its Incredible Biodiversity

Positioned between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, Lake Malawi is Africa's third largest lake.
