Planning a trip to Tanzanie but unsure when to go? Discover everything you need to know about Tanzania's climate and seasons, as well as the best periods for every type of activity you'd like to experience.

In Brief :
Given its location near the equator, Tanzanie can be visited year-round. However, it's best to plan your stay during the dry seasons (May to October or January/February) to enjoy pleasant temperatures and avoid rainfall. This is also the ideal time for wildlife safaris! That said, the rainy seasons have their own advantages: fewer tourists, more competitive rates, and the chance to witness one of the planet's most spectacular natural phenomena: the great migration of wildebeest.

What Is Tanzania's Climate Like?

The Different Seasons in Tanzania

Located in eastern Africa and crossed by the equator, Tanzanie features a temperate tropical climate inland on the highlands, and a humid equatorial climate on the coast. In total, two distinct seasons occur at different times throughout the year:

The Dry Seasons

Tanzanie experiences two dry seasons:

  • The first dry season runs from June to October: temperatures are pleasant across the country and rainfall is almost nonexistent.
  • The second dry season occurs from December to February: this short dry season is sometimes called the hot season due to high temperatures.

The Rainy Seasons

Like the dry seasons, Tanzanie experiences two rainy seasons:

  • The first rainy season occurs from March to May: this is the long rainy season, during which precipitation is most frequent;
  • The second rainy season stretches from November to December: known as the short rainy season, it brings intense but usually brief rainfall. This period tends to be less wet than the long rainy season.

The Tourism Seasons

In Tanzanie, tourism seasons are divided into three periods:

  • High season runs from June to August: this is when the most tourists arrive and accommodation prices peak. It's best to book in advance if you're planning to travel during this period.
  • Low season takes place during the rainy season, particularly between March and May: tourists are few and far between, hotels offer discounted rates, while some establishments close entirely. This is the best time to save money.
  • Shoulder season spans September to February: this is the ideal period for travelers wanting to experience Tanzanie without the crowds while avoiding heavy rains.

What Temperatures Should You Expect?

Tanzanie has a warm climate with minimal temperature variations year-round. Generally, temperatures in Tanzanie range between 68 and 95°F (20-35°C) during the day and can drop to as low as 50°F (10°C) at night in mountainous areas.

As for water temperature, it never drops below 75°F (24°C) and can easily reach 86°F (30°C) by the end of the rainy season.

Each Region Has Its Own Characteristics

Although temperatures remain relatively constant across Tanzanie, the proximity of the Indian Ocean and the presence of highlands in certain regions can influence conditions.

Two distinct climate zones can be identified:

  • The coast bordered by the Indian Ocean and Zanzibar benefit from a humid equatorial climate. This region experiences heavy rainfall during rainy seasons and consistently high temperatures. That said, ocean breezes cool the coast during the dry season.
  • The interior and highlands enjoy a temperate tropical climate. These areas have a drier climate, with warm days but cool nights. Moreover, temperatures are lower at higher elevations, and it's not uncommon for snow to fall on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.

When to Visit Tanzania Based on Your Activities

The Best Time for a Safari in Tanzania

What Is the Best Time to Travel to Tanzania?

It's possible to go on a wildlife safari in Tanzanie year-round. Generally speaking, the best time for a Tanzanie safari falls during the dry seasons, between July and September or between November and February. During these months, the trails are more passable and dry grass makes it easier to spot animals. Additionally, this is when animals gather around water sources.

However, safaris during the rainy season are also possible. Indeed, the period from March to May is the best time to witness the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti. This is also when migratory birds flock to the national parks.

Moreover, the different seasons offer both advantages and disadvantages, as follows:

Advantages

Disadvantages

Dry Seasons
(January–February and June–October)

  • Sunny, warm temperatures with minimal rainfall,
  • Animals more easily spotted around water sources,
  • Crossings of great migration animals in the northern Serengeti.
  • Herds departing from the great migration (Ngorongoro region)
  • Far more tourists,
  • Higher prices for accommodations, flights, and activities.

Rainy Seasons
(March–May and November–December)

  • Lush green landscapes and stunning light for photographers,
  • Observation of migratory birds,
  • Fewer tourists,
  • More attractive pricing.
  • High rainfall and humidity,
  • Animals less visible due to tall grass,
  • Muddy, sometimes impassable tracks,
  • Some accommodations close.

The Best Time to Witness the Great Migration in Tanzania

What Is the Best Time to Travel to Tanzania?

The great migration ranks among the most awaited spectacles during a Tanzanie safari. Each year, millions of animals—chiefly wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes—traverse the north of the country in search of fresh pastureland toward Kenya.

The phenomenon takes place primarily in the Serengeti park where herbivores move northward to cross the Mara River, which serves as a natural border with Kenya. They complete their journey in the Masai Mara park plains before returning the way they came.

The great migration is governed by the rainy season. To help you understand the animals' route month by month:

  • January–February–March: herds congregate in the southeastern plains of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro region in Tanzanie. This is the calving season, particularly for wildebeest.
  • April–May–June: the real journey begins. Herds move northward through the Serengeti and cross the Grumeti River.
  • July–August: the animals reach the border and cross the famous Mara River to access the Masai Mara park in Tanzanie. A word of warning for the faint-hearted: this is when you can observe crocodile attacks.
  • September–October: the herds wind through the Masai Mara plains to feed.
  • November–December: the survivors head back to Tanzanie.

As you can see, the best time to witness the great migration in Tanzanie falls between April and July, with the two peak moments being the crossings of the Grumeti and Mara rivers.

Note:

The great migration is a cyclical phenomenon governed by rainy seasons. Since it depends on climate patterns, the great migration can be unpredictable and vary from year to year. Feel free to contact us for expert advice before planning your itinerary.
