Mahale Mountains National Park ranks among the world's premier wildlife destinations for observing primates. It stretches along the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika, in the Kigoma region, in western Tanzania. Its natural landscapes are a true gift for passionate photographers and safari enthusiasts.

History

The Mahale Mountains were once inhabited by the Batongwe and Holoholo peoples. Around 1979, these communities were forced to leave their land during the park's development. In 1985, Mahale Mountains National Park officially opened its gates.

The park was established across 1,600 km² to preserve thousands of chimpanzees, which have been the subject of a Japanese research project since the 1960s.

Visiting Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park encompasses rich vegetation. Tropical forests flourish in the area, with trees of all kinds including alpine bamboo and bay laurel. These border beautiful grasslands and wooded terrain.

The park is home to 73 species of wildlife, including nine primate species such as the yellow baboon, red colobus, blue monkey and red-tailed monkey. Deep within the forests and scrubland, in a region blessed with a temperate tropical climate, chimpanzees thrive in complete freedom. In the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, over 90 fish species await discovery.

For birdwatching enthusiasts, Mahale Mountains National Park showcases more than 200 bird species, including the African fish eagle, stork and various migratory birds.

Best Time to Visit

Mahale Mountains National Park can be visited year-round, but the best times to venture there are May through October. During this season, the weather is warm and dry, making visits particularly pleasant. Moreover, chimpanzees are easier to locate during this period.

Mahale Mountains National Park stretches along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is accessible only by boat. On-site, walking safaris are organized by local guides.
